There are two kinds of depression – situational and clinical. Situational depression happens when you are stressed and overwhelmed or grieving a loss. Situational depression can be complicated by true clinical depression, but situational depression doesn’t necessarily cause clinical depression.
There is no way to predict how your body will respond after birth. Just know that if you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, not connecting with your baby, feeling hopeless, and if those feelings persist for more than 3-4 weeks after the birth of the baby, then signs are pointing to clinical, postpartum depression rather than situational or the normal post-baby blues, and you should call your doctor.
