Just What Is PMS?

Much as there may be a temptation for women to interpret the acronym ‘PMS’ as ‘the Problem is the Male Species’, medically of course it refers to the Premenstrual Syndrome.  This is a disorder that is experienced by 30-40% of women at some time during their reproductive years and. This has interesting features in common with postnatal depression (PND).

A link was first reported by a French doctor in the mid 19th century who observed that some women with PND experienced a worsening of symptoms prior to menstruation. In the USA in the 1940s patients with puerperal psychosis were observed to show the same swings, becoming worse after ovulation, then improving after the start of the following period. Both these observations suggested a hormonal link.

Mental And Emotional Pain

Mental and emotional pain are often depicted as originating in the head and the heart; the head as the source of mental pain, and the heart as the seat of emotional pain. But this is only partly true, because mental and emotional pain are not physical pain in the sense the word is normally used: neither is limited to just one organ, and each can affect various other organs in the body.

Mental and emotional pain (psychological pain) is what most people know as depression, an allencompassing description that can cover anything from feeling “blue,” perhaps because the weather is cold, to such extreme mental and emotional agony from bereavement, redundancy, or a broken relationship, for example that its victims can feel suicidal. But depression can have a physical cause as well as a psychological one vitamin and mineral deficiency, for example, can be to blame and the interrelationship between the physical and the psychological is both complex and crucial in under standing, and so being able to treat, the problem. Moreover, mental and emotional pain, though closely inter linked, have their own special pain “subsets” and each of these can have a physical cause as well as a psychological one. Nightmares, fears and phobias are examples of pain that tends to be more psychological than physical, while conditions such as manic depression and various psychoses (paranoia and schizophrenia) are more likely to have a physical cause. By comparison, dealing with a sprained ankle is a walk in the park!

Does she have postnatal depression?

One of my best friends had a baby boy a few weeks ago. She’s 18 and is from Maine so she doesnt have any family over here. (Ireland).
Both of our boyfriends and the babys dad are in a band that has been in london for the past couple of days and are staying there till the end of July so i’ve been staying with her to keep her company but ive noticed some changes in her.
I couldnt get Aaron to stop crying the other morning so i took him into her and sort of held him out to her, she just stared at me for like 30seconds before sighing and taking him off me, then as soon as i left the room he started crying again so i went back in a few minutes later with a bottle for her to give him and Aaron was lying on the bed and she was sitting on the floor crying, she told me that she had to have a shower and asked if i would feed him instead so i did.
She’s barely even held him over the past few days, she refuses to leave her house saying that shes fat and unnattractive, any time he cries, she cries too. She doesnt want to feed him, change his clothes or anything, she just keeps saying that he cries even more when shes around.

I really dont know what to do, im only 16 and have no knowledge of babies or anything but ive heard that some of these things are signs of post natal depression. I dont want to tell the babies dad in case im just over reacting but i also dont want to not do anything in case it just keeps getting worse.

Losing weight after pregnancy is a topic many women research and something many worry with. Magazines are filled with stories about celebrities that weigh even less a week after giving birth than what they weighed before conception. However, most women do not have the monetary resources, fitness equipment and personal trainers, which the celebrities have at their disposal. Many celebrities have a secret, in the form of hypoxi training, which targets areas where women are prone to stubborn fat.

Impossible expectations are often to blame for disappointment. It should be realized from the outset that you are not probable to lose much weight in the first few weeks after the baby is born. You should give your womb at least four weeks to adjust to its original size. It may never be the same size as before, but there are many ways to ways to lose body fat that was gained during pregnancy.

What are the causes of PMS? Part 2

In PMS Part 1, we saw the general classification of the four ‘types’ of PMS which showed some promise that we might be able to identify a cause for each set of symptoms. But it turns out that trying to work out the causes of PMS from even an organised list of the possible symptoms is rather like watching a blockbuster 3D movie without the special glasses; you have a general idea of what is going on, but the details are blurred, the colours run into each other, and clarity is tantalisingly out of reach!

However, a glance at the PMS-A/C/D/H categories outlined in the previous article do suggest different factors and the influence of different hormones being involved in each type. For example:
