i told my doc im stressed, but shes treating depression? opinions please….?
Well I’m a single mom, college fulltime and work and a load of other stuff, I have a hair disorder, where when I get stressed my hair will fall out, so I went to the doc today to get medicine to help with the stress, she told me to just keep taking my prenatal vitamins, I told her I wanted to be treated, so she put me on a antidepressant, this to me seems wrong. I love to wake up in the morning, etc, I would consider myself highly stressed but not depressed. Any opinions? Please and thank u. No negative advice please!

Your doctor may think that your stress is based on a certain degree of depression that you have just from being such a busy mom. (Good for you, by the way!) You may not notice it as classic depressive symptoms, but many of the antidepressants treat those symptoms as a whole of depression, anxiety, and stress.
Best wishes to you and give it a couple of weeks to see if it helps.
Do you feel happy when you wake up? Are you happy during the day and look forward to the challenges that each new day brings? If the answer is yes you probably do not need chemical antidepressants as such, something like St Johns Wort might be beneficial. However stress and depression can be interlinked. Maybe you are doing too much. When do you actually stop and relax and enjoy your life and your child? By trying to do so much you may be missing the bigger picture.
Early morning waking is a classic sign of depression, if you wake early and cannot get back to sleep this might be a warning sign that you are indeed more depressed than stressed. I can wake up at 6am go for a pee and go back to sleep until 7.15am when I get up properly.
Antidepressants in themselves are not “wrong” I was prescribed them many years ago following my divorce, it was only when it was over that I became depressed, the “fight” of the divorce kept me going but once that was over I slipped into early morning waking and having nothing during the day to be vaguely happy about. The tablets were fine short term and I soon recovered. I took St Johns Wort for years to relieve PMS and associated low mood.
Did she ask you quite a few questions before prescribing? or was it assumed to be depression. Some anti-depressants work against stress as well as working against depression. The only drugs that are specifically directed to stress are those that are like valium and are addictive and have a problem with diminishing return. Try the medicine she has given you and see if it actually works against your stress, it may calm you down and help you to deal with life better. It will probably take a couple of weeks for you to feel the actual effects of the medicine.
