Is It Advisable To Hire A Live In Nanny
Article by Dominic Donaldson
Having a live in nanny is very popular when it comes to Hollywood. There have been several live in nannys on the silver screen including Mary Poppins and Nanny McPhee and it always seems to work out ok for the families in the films. So why don’t we see more families in real life turning to this option when it comes to looking after their children?
One reason that stops people from hiring a live in nanny can be related to cost. Couples can sometimes assume that having a full time nanny that lives in the house and takes care of the child would be an excessively expensive option. However, if these couples actually bothered to investigate the cost of hiring a nanny then they would actually see that it can be an extremely cost effect way of looking after their children.
The main reason why it can work out to be cheaper is because the wages of the individual being employed is subsidised through the fact that you provide them with lodgings free of charge. Providing free lodgings to the nanny will significantly reduce the cost of the overall wage, although you do need to offset that against the increases that you will incur on certain household bills. Obviously with an extra adult in the house you should expect your gas and electricity bill to increase slightly, whilst the weekly food bill will have to increase to accommodate the new addition to your family.
Another reason that stops people from employing a live in nanny is the fact that it can cause a conflict of interests between the mother of the child and the nanny. Mothers tend to be incredibly close to their children as they spend nine months carrying them around and they have an incredible bond with that child.
When a live in nanny moves in, some mothers take offence at the idea that the child spends so much time with the nanny and forms a bond with them. Just after the end of a pregnancy is a tender time for a mother and several mothers suffer from postnatal depression, it would not be wise to add more stress and pressure on to that mother by making them feel like they are not needed.
Having a nanny that moves into your home can be of huge benefit to a family and can actually help to save the family money over sending a child to the creche every day, but when you consider the options you need to weigh up all the options and decide what is best for your family.
