Postpartum Depression, Schizophrenia, and Mothers Who Kill Babies……?

What do you think our mental/prenatal health systems could do to protect babies of mothers with mental health issues? If you search “mom kills baby” a hundred diffrent stories come up…. how many babies have to die these gruesome, horrible deaths before some laws are in place to protect them?
I think that babies shouldn’t be sent home with “sick” mothers… the mothers have to stay in a supervised atmosphere or an institution in order to be with her baby/babies. that way she’s under supervision, her baby is protected, and mom gets the help/medication she needs until she shows PROOF that she’s well.

It is a very sad subject. Usually if a parent is found to possibly be dangerous then obviously protection orders are put in place.
Here in the UK after a woman gives birth she has a midwife or health visitor come visit her and the baby at home every single day for at least two weeks. They give advice but mainly, check on the baby and they listen to every little concern or problem you may have and are always available for a chat. Visits at home can help identify problems.
Then when the visits are finished, mothers are asked to bring their children in to the clinic every two weeks for progress check ups. These visits beclome less regular as the baby gets older but if the mother doesn’t turn up for a number of appointments, then the health visitor will call round. This means that most children are monitored quite well for their own good.
Obviously this doesn’t happen for every baby in the UK but it is the general standard for most. It’s not a guarantee that every woman with PND is diagnosed and every child saved, but it helps.
Social services aren’t 100% effective either but they do try.
i agree i think it’s just an excuse to kill and try to get away with it, why would they send the baby home with her if they knew she had problems i don’t understand how the system works i think this could’ve been prevented if looked at right.
