Swallowing prenatal vitamins?
I have always had issues with swallowing pills…and well, all the prenatal vitamins I’ve seen are huge, including the ones I am taking now…but for the health of my baby, and because I’m having horrible morning sickness, I try my best to take them anyway….I’m in my first trimester, and took them everyday for a long time…now I’m taking them every other day…Just the thought of taking them makes me nervous, b/c I’m afraid I can’t get them down! And sometimes if I can’t get it down, I’ll have anxiety, increased heart rate…kinda like an adrenaline rush…I know, all this for a little pill! But I’m told I should take them…My concern is that my nerves are hurting my baby more than taking the pill is helping…Are there any other options? Can I break them in half, or start taking regular vitamins in my 2nd trimester, since I’ve heard the first is where prenatals are extremely important….I’m not sure what to do…any advice?

try taking flinstones complete childrens vitamins until you feel comfortable taking prenatals. many pregnant women end up having to do this.
BTW, i asked my doctor if i could break mine in half because they are huge and she said no. i am not sure if it was just her opinion or if there is a reason for this.
break them in half would do good. you could also crush them and put it in koolaid or something so you can drink it.
Talk to your OB. I have heard of taking chewable vitamins. Maybe this would help you.
you can cut them in half you can crush them and mix them with something like chocolate pudding or other more appetizing item. Also consider the option that alot of pregnant women have to do. Go buy the children gummy vitamins and take an adult dosage of those and buy folic acid tablets by themself so you get enough folic for the baby. The folic acid tabs are only about as wide as a m&m and thinner so should be much easier to get down.
First, I suggest taking your prenatal vitamins with your evening meal, rather than in the morning, to minimize the nausea that they cause for some women. You may be able to cut them in half; that’s something you should ask your pharmacist, as he/she will know if that would create a problem in any way. Stay with your prenatal vitamins throughout your pregnancy; they contain important trace elements that your baby needs throughout his/her development.
The best hint I can give you for swallowing them is to simply put one on your tongue, and take a BIG sip of water, milk, or other liquid. Your esophagus is a LOT bigger around than those pills
Yes i would suggest you break them in half. I had a problem with swallowing mine and the dr. told me to break it in half and now i have no problem taking them and i am due with my third child in 3 weeks.
my doc gave me a list and there’s some called gummi-vites and you just eat 4 a day and they’re just like gummi bears
Girl I feel ya on that one. I hated taking mine and to be quite honest I did not take mine everyday. Try cutting them in half. Take one half in the morning and the other later in the day. It helps when I take a drink of something, hold it in my mouth, then pop the pill, take another sip then swallow. Good luck on those horse pills. They are a pain.
i have the same problem i get a big gulp of water put it in my mouth and toss the pill and then swallow both works out good….good luck
The most important time in your pregnancy is the first trimester. By the 12 week the baby’s organs and limbs are fully formed. It’s important to take your vitamins, because if the baby isn’t getting enough nutrients, it will leach it from you. Ask your doctor if you can break the pill in 2. That should make it easier for you.
Those vitamins ARE like horse pills, eh?
I am not sure what size they are, but there is a new vitamin that you take 2x a day. It is supposed to help you not to get so sick from them, so it may help the morning sickness, too. I would think they would be smaller since they only need 1/2 the vitamins. I really don’t think you can change to regular vitamins after the first trimester. Your body needs more of different types of vitamins than regular vitamins give.
I found some at walmart that are much smaller but you have to take two of them. They are much easier to get down. I have the same pill taking problem.
I have the same problem..can’t swallow pills. Doctor prescribed me w/Nata chews…ask for a prescription next time. They are chewable and you only have to take one a day. Doctor also told me that taking flintstone or any chewable children’s vitamin was just as good too. Check at the store on the back of the prenatal bottle and the chewable ones too and see how many chewables you need to take to equal what’s in prenatals. W/flintstones and the other it is usually two a day. I also chew one of the Viactive calcium chews that are like lil chocolates. I don’t drink enough milk b/c it tastes gross to me so I take one of those a day also. But Natachews are what my doctor gave me a prescription for.
You can break them in half. You don’t really need to take them unless your anemia. You can stop taking them but drink alot of orange juice which will be good for you. I never took them during my 2nd pregnancy and had a healthy 9lb baby.
